SMP Aftercare Day 1–30
Healing Timeline, Products, and What to Avoid in Dubai

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is one of the most effective non-surgical solutions for hair loss in Dubai, but the final look depends almost entirely on how well you care for your scalp in the first 30 days. At Brows & Lips Studio in Dubai, we have guided hundreds of SMP clients through every stage of healing. This comprehensive day-by-day guide covers what to expect, what products to use, and what to avoid so your SMP results last for years.

Why SMP Aftercare Matters More Than the Procedure Itself

Unlike traditional tattoos, SMP pigment is deposited in the upper dermis at very shallow depth. The first 30 days determine how the pigment settles, how evenly it heals, and how long your results last. In Dubai's intense sun, heat, and humidity, aftercare mistakes like sweating, sun exposure, or harsh shampoos can cause premature fading, colour shift, or patchy healing. Following this 30-day protocol protects your investment, minimises touch-ups, and locks in the natural, undetectable result you came to us for.

Day 1-3: The Critical First 72 Hours

The first three days are when your scalp is most vulnerable. The micro-wounds are still open, and the pigment is just beginning to settle into the dermis.

What to Do

  • Keep your scalp dry. No shower water directly on the head for 72 hours. Sponge baths only.
  • Sleep on a fresh pillowcase every night. Use a dark-coloured towel on your pillow for the first few nights as some pigment may transfer.
  • Apply the aftercare balm provided by your SMP artist 2-3 times per day in a thin layer.
  • Wear a loose, breathable hat if you must go outside. Avoid tight-fitting caps that touch the treated area.
  • Stay indoors during peak Dubai sun hours (11 AM to 4 PM) for the first week.

What to Avoid

  • Do not wash your scalp. Water exposure too early can push pigment out of the micro-channels.
  • Do not scratch, pick, or rub the treated area. Itching is normal but touching interrupts healing.
  • Do not sweat. No gym, no sauna, no swimming, no long walks in Dubai heat.
  • Do not drink alcohol for 48 hours. Alcohol thins blood and increases inflammation.
  • Do not shave your scalp during this phase.

Day 4-7: The Peeling and Flaking Phase

By day 4, you will notice the treated area starting to feel tight and dry. Small flakes will appear. This is normal and a sign that the outer layer is regenerating.

What to Do

  • You may now shower gently. Use lukewarm (never hot) water and a fragrance-free, sulfate-free shampoo. Pat dry, do not rub.
  • Continue applying aftercare balm 2 times per day to keep the area moisturised.
  • Keep scalp dry for the rest of the day after each shower. Avoid prolonged water contact.
  • Wear SPF 50+ sunscreen or a hat every time you step outside in Dubai.

What to Avoid

  • Do not pick at the flakes. Let them fall off naturally. Picking causes pigment loss and scarring.
  • Do not use anti-dandruff shampoos, scalp scrubs, or any product with salicylic acid or retinol.
  • Do not use hair dryers on hot setting. Cool air only, or air dry.
  • Avoid gyms, pools, saunas, and beach activities.

Day 8-14: Settling Phase

The flakes are gone, but your SMP may look lighter than expected. This is called "ghosting" and is completely normal. The pigment is still settling under the skin and will gradually return to its intended shade over the next 2-3 weeks.

What to Do

  • Resume normal showering. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo.
  • Continue moisturising with the aftercare balm or a fragrance-free scalp moisturiser.
  • Daily SPF 50+ on the scalp is non-negotiable in Dubai's UV index.
  • You can resume light exercise (walking, cycling) but avoid heavy sweating.

What to Avoid

  • Do not panic if your SMP looks faded. This is part of normal healing, not pigment loss.
  • Avoid chlorine pools, saltwater, and steam rooms until day 21.
  • Do not apply minoxidil, hair growth serums, or any active ingredients to the scalp yet.
  • Avoid hats that trap heat and moisture against the scalp.

Day 15-21: Strengthening Phase

By the third week, the pigment has stabilised. Most clients see roughly 70% of their final colour at this point. The scalp is mostly healed but still maturing beneath the surface.

What to Do

  • Resume your full normal routine including gym workouts and swimming pools.
  • Continue daily SPF 50+ on the scalp.
  • You may shave your scalp with an electric foil shaver. Avoid rotary razors that pull at the skin.
  • Book your first SMP touch-up session if advised by your artist (typically 4-6 weeks after the final session).

What to Avoid

  • Do not use harsh chemical treatments, hair dye, or bleach on the scalp.
  • Do not scratch if mild itching returns. Lightly tap the area instead.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure even with SPF. Hats are still your best friend.

Day 22-30: Final Maturation

By day 30, your SMP is fully settled at the surface level. The pigment has integrated into the dermis and your final result is visible. Most clients see roughly 85-90% of the final colour, with the rest darkening subtly over the next 4-6 weeks.

What to Do

  • Maintain SPF 50+ on the scalp every day for the rest of your life. UV exposure is the #1 cause of SMP fading.
  • Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo for long-term scalp care.
  • Stay hydrated. Dubai's heat dehydrates skin faster than most climates.
  • Schedule your SMP touch-up if needed. Most clients need one touch-up at 6-12 months for optimal density.

What to Avoid

  • Do not skip sunscreen. Even short drives in Dubai expose your scalp to UVA through car windows.
  • Do not use abrasive scalp scrubs or exfoliants. They lift pigment over time.
  • Do not skip your touch-up session if your artist recommends one. Density builds over multiple sessions.

Best Products for SMP Aftercare in Dubai

  • Fragrance-free, sulfate-free shampoo: Cetaphil, Vanicream, or any baby shampoo without dyes.
  • Aftercare balm: The balm your artist provides, or a thin layer of pure aloe vera gel (no alcohol).
  • SPF 50+ scalp sunscreen: Specialist scalp SPF sticks or lightweight mineral sprays designed for bald heads.
  • Loose cotton hats: Breathable protection that does not trap heat.

Long-Term SMP Maintenance in Dubai

SMP is permanent but it fades gradually over 4-6 years due to UV exposure, skin cell turnover, and lifestyle factors. Dubai's climate accelerates this. To extend results:

  • SPF 50+ daily is the single most important habit.
  • Book a refresh session every 3-5 years to maintain density.
  • Avoid harsh chemical scalp treatments long-term.
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy scalp environment.

When to Contact Your SMP Artist

Reach out to your SMP provider immediately if you notice any of the following during the 30-day healing window:

  • Persistent redness or swelling after day 5
  • Pus, foul smell, or hot-to-touch areas (signs of infection)
  • Large patches of pigment loss (not the normal fading)
  • Raised bumps or rash spreading beyond the treated area

At Brows & Lips Studio in Dubai, every SMP client receives direct access to their artist during the healing period for any concern.
